My Latest Earworm
The band 'Morphine'.

How did I not know this band before? They are right up my alley.
I was listening to BlueBOB after the recent passing of David Lynch and asked ChatGPT what other songs are in this same vein as this kind of "experimental rock" genre but a bit less "industrial" and it recommended Morphine.
- Morphine the band, not the drug. đ
Upon listening to them my first impressions were a complicated mix of feelings in which the order can be best encapsulated as:
- "Oh, there's no guitar? This is weird."
- "Hmm... They are unique."
- "Oh that's catchy... and that too."
- "Okay, I think I am in love!"
- "Where have you been all my life?"

Morphine was an American alternative rock band from Cambridge, Massachusetts, that pioneered a style they dubbed âlow rock.â Fusing elements of blues, jazz, and rock, the band crafted a dark, moody, and strippedâdown sound defined by its unconventional instrumentationâa twoâstring slide bass (handled by frontman Mark Sandman), Dana Colleyâs soulful baritone saxophone, and a driving drum kit. Formed in 1989 with drummer Jerome Deupree (later replaced by Billy Conway), their minimalistic setup and deep, resonant vocals set them apart from traditional rock trios, leaving a lasting influence on alternative music.
At the core of Morphineâs sonic identity was Sandmanâs innovative approach to the bass. He transformed a standard fourâstring instrument by removing the upper strings, leaving only the two lowest strings, and used a slide to extract a uniquely deep, resonant tone.
This strippedâdown method wasnât just a musical choiceâit was a reflection of a life marked by hardship. Before his musical breakthrough, Sandman worked as a taxi driver and endured a violent robbery during which he was stabbed while behind the wheel. The pain of that experience, compounded by the devastating loss of his two brothers, seeped into his songwriting and performance, imbuing his music with a melancholic yet defiant edge.
In a life defined by both creative brilliance and personal tragedy, Sandman channeled his struggles into a distinctive sound that resonated with fans worldwideâuntil his sudden, fatal heart attack during an onstage performance in Italy (1999) ended his journey.

This is definitely a band that ended too soon and 'one for the books' as they say.
Happy listening.
